Look up your 2026 Boston Marathon qualifying time by age and gender, see your race time vs the standard, and check whether your course’s downhill drop changes your eligibility. Plus the part most calculators ignore: BQ time alone hasn’t guaranteed entry since 2014, we tell you the realistic buffer too.
Pick age group + gender. The 2026 standards apply for races from September 1, 2024 onward used in the 2026 registration cycle. Women and non-binary share standards.
Enter your marathon time to see margin vs BQ and apply the downhill index if your course was net-downhill.

Hitting the BQ standard is necessary, not sufficient.
Boston has been over-subscribed every year since 2014. That means the BAA accepts the fastest qualifiers in each age group, not all of them. Recent cutoffs have ranged from BQ −1:39 (2025 race) to BQ −5:29 (2024 race). Plan to be ~5–7 minutes under if you want a realistic shot.
The BAA tightened all standards by 5 minutes for the 2026 race onward. The intent: reduce the cutoff buffer needed. Early signs are it’s working, but until we have several cycles of data, treat BQ-5 as the realistic target.
For races from Sep 13, 2025 onward, courses with net drop ≥ 1500 ft get a time penalty. 1500–2999 ft → +5:00 · 3000–5999 ft → +10:00 · ≥ 6000 ft → not eligible. Targets the “mountain marathons” (Tunnel, REVEL, Mt. Charleston) that flooded BQ entries with downhill-aided times.
Standards and downhill policy come from the Boston Athletic Association. Always verify on the BAA website before registering, rules can change between cycles.
Three patterns in athletes who get to Boston:
For honest pacing targets at BQ effort: pair this with the Advanced running predictor to convert your recent 5K / 10K / half into a marathon target. And lab testing gives you the metabolic crossover so race-day fueling doesn’t become the limiter.
