The system changed. Three pieces explain it.
The fastest finisher in each age group + gender at a qualifier event gets one automatic slot. If they decline, the slot rolls down to 2nd, then 3rd. If still unclaimed, it moves into the performance pool, but only into the same-gender pool.
The remaining slots split into a men’s pool and women’s pool. The split mirrors the ratio of male-to-female starters at that race. Within each pool, slots go to the fastest age-graded times.
Your raw finish time × the official Kona / 70.3 Standard ratio for your age + gender. Lower wins. The ratio is meant to put a fast 70-year-old and a fast 30-year-old on the same scale within their gender.
No course-difficulty penalty (unlike Boston). Ranking is relative to your event’s field, after age-grading, within your gender. This calculator is an unofficial helper, defer to IRONMAN’s published documentation and on-site roll-down lists.
The 2026 system rewards three things, in this order:
Practical: if you’re ~5–10 min short of an AG win, look at events with fewer entrants in your AG, smaller fields overall, harder bike courses (slower times = more spread = bigger margin matters less), or tougher conditions (heat, hills) that thin the field.

Where the numbers come from and what they mean.
Built from historical age-group winners' relative times. Ratio = your AG time / the absolute peak (=1.00). Younger and older AGs get lower ratios; multiplying your time by your ratio brings them all to a comparable scale.
Half-distance ratios are not the same as Kona ratios. Half-distance racing is more aerobic-power-limited; full-distance more durability-limited. The age-fade differs accordingly.
The ratios are gender-specific. There’s no cross-gender ranking, the 2026 system puts each gender in its own pool with its own slots. Your age-graded time only matters relative to others of your gender at your event.
